Why It Matters
While in Africa, we visited a Samburu Village with a Samburu warrior guide who was raised in the village, and he educated us about the Samburu culture. The Samburu tribe are pastoralists who in the past have herded cattle, but due to the extreme drought now predominately herd goats. They subsist primarily on a blend of goat's milk and the blood of cattle and reside in dung-thatched huts. A historically nomadic people, the Samburu people have, in the past decade, maintained permanent villages after recognizing the importance of formal education. The Samburu people are working to find new opportunities for themselves and their children, including classroom education as an alternative to knowledge in the form of village and farming practices. Many children, especially young girls, never have the opportunity to attend school. For girls, at birth it is decided if they will be allowed to attend school or if they must assist their mothers in the village. With Books for the Bush, we hope to give all Samburu children an opportunity to expand their knowledge and allow them the possibility of pursuing a career outside their familial duties. |
Our Goal
The goal of Books for the Bush is to give children the gift of knowledge through books, which will provide them with the opportunity to pursue a career or a higher level of education.
